12-YEAR OLD SEVERN SUZUKI’S SPEECH AT UNITED NATIONS IN 1992

Severn Suzuki, as a little girl at age 9, from Canada founded the Environmental Children’s Organization (ECO), a group of children dedicated to learning and teaching other youngsters about environmental issues. In 1992, at age 12, Suzuki raised money with members of ECO to attend the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro.

At the Summit, she spoke about starving children around the world, plants and animals endangered by human activities, greedy nature of many of the rich people, hypocrisy of many of us, and so on. The video has since become a viral hit, popularly known as “The Girl Who Silenced the World for 5 Minutes”. In 1993, she was honored in the United Nations Environment Programme’s Global 500 Roll of Honour.
